Last but not least, just as Superman has Lex Luthor (and a whole gallery of rogues) so Tom Strong has Paul Saveen (and a whole gallery of rogues). We also know – via the likes of Miracleman – that the idea of Superman, that kind of masculine ideal – appeals to Moore, if only as something that he can deconstruct and mess around with. We know that Moore has dabbled with Superman (see Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow?). Let’s be superficial for a moment, though, shall we? Tom Strong looks like Superman (ish). Plus there is no will they / won’t they style intrigue like you have with Superman and Lois Lane – Tom Strong is married, has a daughter – and a computerised butler and a talking ape companion, for Pete’s sake. His super strength is nothing to do with the sun, he was just raised right and eats healthily and all the rest of it. He isn’t anything like Superman! He was raised by his scientist parents on the island of Attabar Teru for one, not far away in Space. (Wait a minute, all of the Tom Strong aficionados holler. Tom Strong, for the uninitiated, is a sort of Superman figure.
